The Cheapest Sticker Isn't Always the Cheapest Price: VAT at Checkout in Lebanon, by the Numbers

Most Lebanese electronics shops show a price that already includes VAT, or say nothing about it. A few large ones show a lower price and add 11% VAT at checkout. Side by side, the second kind looks cheaper. We checked how often that changes the answer. Of the 6,025 products that three or more Lebanese shops listed new in the first week of November 2026, 856 had a lowest sticker price that was not the lowest price to pay. In those cases, the shop that looked cheapest was not.

What we know about each shop's VAT

LebTech lists 236 shops in Lebanon. For 19 of them we have a recorded VAT policy. 12 show prices with VAT included (11 of them confirmed). 7 add VAT at checkout (6 confirmed). The 7 are not small: together they carried about 41,900 in-stock listings in the first week of November.

For the other 217 shops we have no recorded policy, and we treat their sticker as the price you pay. Most smaller Lebanese shops quote a single all-in price, but it is a question worth one line in a WhatsApp message before you go.

How often it changes the winner

We took every product that at least three shops listed new and in stock, checked between 1 and 7 November 2026. For each, we found the shop with the lowest sticker, then the shop with the lowest price after adding 11% where a shop adds it at checkout.

  • 6,025 products were sold by three or more shops.
  • 3,160 of them, 52%, had at least one shop that adds VAT at checkout among their sellers.
  • In 856 products, 14% of the total and 27% of those with such a shop, the lowest sticker was not the lowest price to pay.

Six real examples

Each line is one product as listed on 1-7 November 2026. The lowest sticker belonged to a shop that adds VAT at checkout. The last column is how much more you would pay by going for that sticker instead of the cheapest all-in price.

Where it happens most

Among the big purchases, laptops and TVs stand out. Of the 612 laptops that three or more shops sold new, 134 (21.9%) had a lowest sticker that was not the lowest price to pay. For TVs it was 61 of 274 (22.3%). In the middle case, that misleading sticker sat $55 below the real cheapest price for a laptop and $49 below it for a TV. That is small enough to look like an ordinary bargain, and not enough to cover 11%.

Phones are the other end: 13 of 185 products, 7%. Tablets were at 9.9% and consoles at 8.1%. PC components had the highest rate of all, 26.6%, but there the sticker gap was typically $3, so the wrong shop costs you little.

The more it costs, the more it matters

11% is the same on every price, but the dollars are not. On a $460 phone, VAT is $51, enough to push a sticker that is $14 below the next shop to $37 above it. On a $1,249 MacBook it is $137, more than the $130 between the cheapest and the median shop selling that laptop. A sticker can look like the best price in the country and end up almost $100 above it.

It also works the other way. A shop that adds VAT can still be the cheapest after VAT, and often is. Of the 3,160 products with such a seller, the sticker winner stayed the winner in 73% of cases. Adding VAT at checkout is a legitimate way to show prices. The only mistake is comparing a VAT-excluded sticker with a VAT-included one.

How LebTech handles it

For the shops whose policy we know, LebTech ranks and shows the price you would pay, with VAT added for shops that add it at checkout. A listing whose own title says VAT is included is taken at its word. That is why a product page can show a shop above another even when its sticker on the shop's own site is lower.

For shops with no recorded policy, we show the sticker. If one of those shops adds VAT at checkout and we do not know it yet, its price on LebTech will look up to 11% better than it is. If you find one, report the price on the product page and we will check it.

What to do before you pay

  • Ask "is VAT included in this price?" in writing, especially when one shop is $30 to $100 below everyone else on a laptop or a phone.
  • Compare all-in prices only: the number on the invoice, not the number on the shelf.
  • If a shop quotes VAT-excluded, multiply by 1.11 before comparing. $1,000 becomes $1,110.
  • If you need a VAT invoice for a business, ask for it before you pay, not after.
