Same iPhone 17, Hundreds of Dollars Apart: Why Lebanese Shops Price It So Differently
In the first week of November 2026, 32 Lebanese shops listed a new iPhone 17 Pro Max with 256GB. The cheapest asked $1,400. The dearest, once VAT was added, asked $1,732. The median shop asked $1,520. That is $332 between the two ends for what looks like the same phone. It mostly is not the same phone. When we sorted the listings by what their titles say, four things explained most of the gap: whether the phone takes a physical SIM, what warranty the shop names, whether VAT is added at checkout, and, at one shop, the colour.
The biggest single reason: eSIM-only or physical SIM
Apple sells some iPhone 17 models without a SIM tray in markets such as the US. Those units take an eSIM only. Units built for other markets keep a physical SIM slot. Lebanese shops import both, and most say which in the title: "eSIM", "1 SIM", "SIM + eSIM" and so on.
We split the listings by that wording. Listings that did not say either way are left out of this table. Across every model with enough listings, the physical-SIM version cost more.
| Model | eSIM-only: shops | eSIM-only: median | Physical SIM: shops | Physical SIM: median | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17, 256GB | 6 | $980 | 8 | $1,060 | $80 |
| iPhone 17 Pro, 256GB | 7 | $1,353 | 12 | $1,443 | $90 |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max, 256GB | 13 | $1,475 | 11 | $1,603 | $128 |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max, 512GB | 12 | $1,685 | 11 | $1,835 | $150 |
The same shop, two prices
Comparing different shops mixes many things at once. The cleaner test is a shop that lists both versions of the same phone. Several do. One listed the Pro Max 256GB eSIM at $1,440 and the 1-SIM version at $1,595, a $155 difference under one roof. A second shop shows another label at work: it asked $1,465 for the eSIM unit and $1,549 for units marked "Not Active", that is, never activated, whether eSIM or SIM. That label alone added $84.
If you want a physical SIM, that premium is real and you will pay it at most shops. If an eSIM works for you, it is the easiest $90 to $150 you will save on this phone. Before you buy an eSIM-only iPhone, ask your mobile operator whether your line can move to an eSIM and what it costs. Do that first, not after the box is open.
What the warranty words mean for the price
Many listings name the warranty in the title: "2 Years Warranty", "Apple Warranty", "ABM", "Tech+ Warranty", "Screen & Back Warranty". These are not the same thing, and shops charge for the difference. One shop listed the same Pro Max 256GB at $1,455 with "Apple Warranty" and at $1,545 with its "Tech+" warranty, $90 apart.
We cannot check from a listing what each warranty covers, who honours it, or for how long. That is the question to ask before paying: who do I call if the screen fails in month eight, and is it in writing? A higher price with a clear local warranty can be the better buy. A higher price with a vague one is just a higher price.
VAT: the dearest listing was not the dearest sticker
The $1,732 at the top of the range is a shop that adds 11% VAT at checkout. Its sticker says $1,560, which on its own looks like an ordinary price, $40 above the median. Most phone shops in our data show a price that already includes VAT or say nothing about it, so a VAT-excluded sticker can look cheaper than it is. On LebTech that shop's price is shown with VAT added, so the ranking reflects what you would pay.
Colour, at one shop
One shop listed the Pro Max 256GB eSIM at $1,530 in blue and at $2,100 in Cosmic Orange. That is a $570 premium for a colour. It is why the single highest listing we saw was $2,100, which is not in the range above because we count each shop at its cheapest listing, and that shop sold the same phone for $1,530. If a price looks wild, check the colour in the title.
Has it got cheaper since the summer?
Not at the bottom of the market. The cheapest new Pro Max 256GB we recorded was $1,400 in every week from early August to the first week of November. The number of shops listing it grew from 18 to 32 over the same period, partly because more shops stocked it and partly because LebTech added shops in October. More shops did not push the floor lower.
For the base iPhone 17 with 256GB, the cheapest new listing was $893 in the week of 3 August and $870 in the first week of November, a $23 drop.
Before you pay
Four questions that would have explained almost every gap above:
- Is it eSIM-only or does it take a physical SIM? If eSIM, can my line move to one?
- Whose warranty is it, for how long, and is it written on the invoice?
- Is VAT included in this price?
- Is this exact colour and storage the one in the listing, or is the price for a different one?
